First off, we had the trailer reinforced to support the additional weight of the house. (I estimate it to weigh between 2-3000 lbs). We had the frame rebuilt, and added 3500# springs.
The animation below shows my plan to attach the house to the trailer. I know, compared to other tiny houses, this is an unconventional method, but because my house wasn't built on the trailer, it would have been difficult any other way.
Let me now explain my plan in detail:
A double layer of 2x6's are bolted in multiple places directly to the trailer frame. The composite action of the wood and steel further reinforces the frame, and provides additional height from the floor to the wheel. The floor is supported by the 2x6 frame. The house is then attached to the wood frame by a 2x10 which is bolted into the floor and studs. It rests on the 2x6 frame and is anchored to the trailer with steel brackets.
On to the transfer:
With the 2x6 frame bolted to the trailer, we were ready to transfer the house to the trailer. After much question on how to do this, it was decided that it would be best to slide the structure on to the trailer.
First, we lined up the trailer with the house. The house was jacked up, and 14' 2x6's were inserted under the house and over the trailer. Using a tractor and winch, the house was slid along the the 2x6's until it was on the trailer. the house was jacked up again and the 2x6s were removed.
Done!
Next step: add the 2x10's around house.
Not yet done.
